DOG SPORTS There is a huge variety of DogSports available; Agility, Rally-O, Obedience, DockDiving, Flyball, TrieBall to name just a few. Each month we are going to chat ‘in a nut-shell’ about a sport you can do with your dog – this month BREED SHOWS

Your First Dog Show – Part 1
If you have never been to a dog show before, it can be a very confusing and puzzling activity.

Breeds are divided up into Groups; Working, Toy, Non-Sporting etc.

Some of the first questions asked by a newcomer are:
1) What is the judge looking for? 2) Why do only some dogs go in once and others go in again? 3) Do the dogs win lots of money? 4) What is a Championship?

What’s the Judge Looking For? The purpose; to select the best representative of every breed – within the Judges Assigned Group (s). Classes are initially defined by age. The winners of each age group then compete against each other. The Judge selects one dog within the Group that best fits the Official Breed Standard for that particular breed, comparing each dog to the Official Breed Standard as written by each Breed Club. (The Official Breed Standard is a description of each breed, which specifically describes what the breed should look like and how it should move and act – Breeders adhere to this when selecting dogs to partner in their breeding program).

It is VERY specific; detailing demeanor, size, shape, coat texture, length, mouth shape, gum colour, eye colour, tail set & movement. It’s the Judges responsibility to know the standard for each breed he judges. He then is asked to select the best dogs that meets the Standard.

Every Judge perceives things slightly differently and it comes down to Personal Opinion on the day.

Many thanks to Kay (Instructor) who has been involved in the Show Ring for many years.

CLICKER TRAINING

A CLICKER or MARKER – often “YES” is used to mark the exact behaviour at the exact time it was performed. Most Zoo’s & Marine Parks use CLICKERS/MARKER to train their animals for a wide range of behaviours. To the Lions….stick your foot here – I need to trim your nails (true-story)…. Dolphins are trained with a WHISTLE.
Once understood & the handlers skill level is adequate; CLICKERS are an invaluable training tool.
GOLDEN RULE: one CLICK – one TREAT – EVERYTIME.
Once behaviour is established, add cues & stop clicking until you either raise or change the criteria.

Generalised Fear
Curious how fear is so quickly generalised to an area, noise or situation

I’ve been baby-sitting a dog whilst her owner vacations…Heidi has been staying here since she was a puppy (what’s 1 more dog right?).

I’ve taught her to toilet in the same area, now 3years old, Heidi, as trained, was in ‘the’ area…Kruger barked at the exact moment Heidi was eliminating……

Heidi got a fright & zoomed back to me.

What’s interesting is …
Heidi blamed the spot….

Read that again!

Out of curiosity; I did no work to eradicate the fear; within 4 days the fear escalated to that entire corner of the house-yard!!

Interesting point if you are in the process of toilet-training….
Remember, Heidi blamed the ‘spot’ – not the action!

Taking the concept further – fear can quickly undo an established behaviour based on the ‘dogs perception’.

For those wondering – ’Yes! If the fear is still evident, I will fix it on the next visit! 

TRY THIS NEW TRICK

“Goodnight”

Arm yourself with a bath towel or very soft mat – suitable for your size dog.

Have your dog in a ‘down’ position – if your dog doesn’t ‘down’ in a given spot, ask your Instructor to help.

.Put a treat under the corner of the towel; when your dog nuzzles to move the towel – ‘click’ or ‘yes’. You are rewarding for the mouth on the edge of the towel.

Progress to moving the treat to hand; click/treat when your dog starts picking up the corner of the towel.

When the behaviour is established add the cue – I use a very original one…”PICK-IT-UP”.

The next part – taught separately; With your dog in a down, LURE dogs nose to shoulder, then spine, then other side of dog to produce the ‘ROLL-OVER’

Each position is clicked/yes & treated!

Once you have both portions of the trick consistent – add them both together….
.
The end behaviour is your dog wrapping himself up by rolling with the towel in his mouth when you say …….
“Goodnight”
